A bit of history:
In 1595, the then MacLeod of Dunvegan (Ruaraidh Mhor) and Sir Iain MacCrimmon
signed the Deed of Friendship and it was during Ruaraidh Mhor's lifetime that the
MacCrimmons became hereditary pipers to the Chiefs of the Clan MacLeod. In
return the MacCrimmons were given land at Borreraig.
The
building was constructed in 1881 in a traditional stone manner
under a slated roof by Dr. Alexander Ross of Inverness (1834 - 1925), a
prominent Victorian architect who built a number of notable buildings throughout
the Highlands (e.g. St Andrew's Cathedral and The Bishop's Palace and also Ardross, Duncraig and Skibo Castles). Situated in the crofting township of Borreraig, this former school and
schoolhouse was previously used as the MacCrimmon Piping Heritage Centre.
